I didn't grow up thinking about IT. I grew up watching my grandfather run his business.

He owned a group of car dealerships — a real operator, sharp instincts, built something from nothing. I spent my childhood watching him trade, watching him lead, watching him build. It left a mark that never faded.

But the business never sold. He closed it down. Floods hit him — three or four of them in the space of six or seven years — and the last one pushed him over the edge. He probably could have sold. He probably didn't know how to position it so the value he'd built could be realised. He became one of the statistic most owners never hear about: the vast majority of businesses never successfully sell.

One generation got the benefit. The next didn't. That stayed with me.

Most owners are never taught how the value they build gets protected — or how it gets realised.

For the past decade, I helped scale an outsourced IT and cybersecurity business from €1 million to €4 million. Ten years sitting across the table from owners, CFOs and MDs — learning what they actually needed from technology. Not products. Not jargon. A partner who spoke their language.

Some of those owners taught me the discipline this business is built on: every technology decision priced twice — the cost, and the cost times your multiple. Watching businesses exit well, I saw exactly which technology decisions compounded value and which quietly ate it.

Most IT companies weren't having that conversation. They still aren't. That's why I built Dividend IT.

The name is intentional. A dividend is a return on investment — something that pays you back. That's exactly what your IT should do.
